Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Unveils Marvel's Most Self-Referential TV Show To Date
The Marvel studio is aware that viewers could be experiencing some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to include this exact concept into their upcoming superhero show.
Indeed, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer, which premiered on October 10th, also subtly pushed the Wonder Man launch date back from its original end of 2025 slot into January 2026.
Why one more superhero movie? Everyone is tired of superheroes. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man spoke to me on a profound level. There is an chance to surprise audiences. To reinvent the whole genre of narrative.
The interviewer responds: "Have you considered about the cast?"
The trailer then cuts to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the interview on his phone, and the preview concludes.
What We Know About Wonder Man
We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a film star who transforms into a super-powered being (Wonder Man).
The rest of the cast includes Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC agent P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach
We don't know much else about the plot of Wonder Man, but it's clear that Marvel plans to poke some fun at itself.
In the aftermath of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is fully committed on self-referential comedy. Will that work without the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? We'll have to wait and see.
